Keeping Leaders Engaged
The Art of “Getting Out of the Way”
The best thing you can do for your leadership team is to empower them. The best way to empower them is often to simply get out of their way.
By this point you’ve set up your leadership candidates to be bold, to make decisions and take action. The last thing you want to do is stifle them. Yes, this will likely be the most difficult phase for you, but letting go and trusting them is the best thing you can do.
They need to start taking up space outside of your bubble and they need to feel empowered.
Your job is to be there to coach them when they need it. And to hold them accountable. Remember the best way to maintain accountability is through your meeting routine. Have check-ins:
● Every week for pertinent tactical concerns
● Every month for performance metrics and KPIs
● Every quarter for strategic planning
● Every year for big picture initiatives and long-term goals
Letting go can be difficult, but before you know it you’ll be thinking less about how the team is performing in the office and worrying more about how you’re performing on the back nine.
